Health concerns forces president Biya to boycott AU Summit

The president of the Republic of Cameroon Paul Biya will be represented by his prime minister, Philemon Yang, at the 30th African Union (AU) summit, to be held January 28-29 in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia, according to an official statement released Saturday night .

The reasons for this absence were not specified in the said communiqué. But according to a Twitter account of an English-speaking activists who has been following President Biya’s movements ( @GVA_Watcher), a Boeing 777 plane landed at the Geneva airport on January 26, 2018 at about 10:39:27 and the Cameroonian President was one of its passengers.

This same plane took off yesterday from Geneva airport (Switzerland) at 13:24:22 without the Cameroonian strong man on board. According to some information he was ill and is in Swiss for health reasons.

This absence comes once again to revive the debate on the state of health of the 84 years old President Paul Biya, who still wants to seek another seven year term in office.

This is not the first time that Mr Biya has left Yaounde for Europe for health reasons. But just a few months before the presidential election and with the current socio -political unrest in various parts of the country and most especially the ongoing war he declared on the two English-speaking regions that is shaking Cameroon, this umpteenth absence worries observers of the political life of the country.
